The UK government Fuel Finder scheme explained

22 February 2026

Houses of Parliament, London

In 2026, the UK government launched the Fuel Finder scheme to bring transparency to fuel pricing across the country. Here's what it means for drivers and how PumpSaver uses this data.

What is the Fuel Finder scheme?

The Fuel Finder scheme requires UK fuel retailers to report their forecourt prices to a central government database. This data is then made available through an open API, allowing services like PumpSaver to display live prices from thousands of stations.

Who has to report?

All fuel retailers operating in the UK are required to participate in the scheme. This includes major brands (Shell, BP, Esso), supermarkets (Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons), and independent stations. However, the scheme is still relatively new and some retailers may not yet be fully compliant — for example, Asda stations are not currently appearing in the data.

What data is available?

The scheme provides prices for three main fuel types: Unleaded petrol (E10), Super Unleaded (E5), and Diesel (B7). It also includes station details like address, brand, opening hours, and amenities such as car washes, electric vehicle charging, and air pumps.

How PumpSaver uses this data

PumpSaver fetches the latest data from the Fuel Finder API twice daily and presents it in a clean, user-friendly format. We calculate UK-wide and regional averages, track price trends over time, identify the biggest daily price changes, and make it easy to search for cheap fuel by location. Our goal is to take the raw government data and make it genuinely useful for everyday drivers.

Why this matters

Before the Fuel Finder scheme, comparing fuel prices meant driving past stations and noting prices, or relying on crowdsourced data that was often out of date. The government scheme provides a standardised, reliable source of pricing data that levels the playing field for consumers. Tools like PumpSaver turn that data into actionable savings.
